How to Wash Your Eyelids: The 4-Step Peeqing Method

Daily eyelid cleansing, or peeqing, is one of the simplest and most effective ways to protect your eyes from dryness, irritation, and inflammation.

The world is changing rapidly - and basically every drug, every surgery, every new technology device, is causing dramatic changes to our eyes and eyelids. The number one thing you can do to protect your eyes is to peeq your eyelids.

So, here's your quick guide to a complete and effective eyelid hygiene session. You can do this at the sink or in the shower, once per day.

Step 1: Wash Your Hands

Before touching your face or eyes, thoroughly wash your hands with soap and warm water for at least 20 seconds.

Why it matters: Clean hands reduce the risk of transferring bacteria to the delicate eye area.

Step 2: Apply Cleanser to Your Fingers

Dispense a small amount of your eyelid cleanser (such as a lid foam or gel) onto your fingertips or into your palm. DO NOT USE BABY SHAMPOO OR REGULAR SOAP. These have been shown to create problems over time.

Tip: Choose a lid-safe cleanser formulated for the sensitive skin around the eyes. Foaming options make it easier to apply and control.

Step 3: Peeq Your Lids (Massage Gently Along Lash Line)

This is the peeqing step.

With your eyes closed, gently massage the cleanser along the lid margins and lash line using small, circular motions. Cover both the upper and lower eyelids, moving from the inner to outer corners.

Be gentle. The goal is to lift away debris, oil, and bacteria — no scrubbing needed.

Step 4: Rinse Entire Face with Warm Water

After cleansing, rinse your entire face — including the eye area — with warm (not hot) water to remove all traces of cleanser.

Pat your face dry with a clean towel.

Consistency is key. One full Peeqing session per day is ideal for most people with dry eye or blepharitis symptoms.

✨ Optional Add-Ons to Enhance Your Routine

These extra steps can elevate your peeqing experience, especially if you have ongoing eyelid inflammation or oil gland dysfunction.

Optional Step Before Peeqing: Warm Compress

Apply a clean, warm compress (like a microwaveable eye mask) over your closed eyes for 5–10 minutes at 104°F (40°C).

  • Microwave most masks for ~15 seconds
  • Helps loosen clogged meibomian glands before peeqing - where the gunk will get pushed out (or “expressed”)
  • Great for dry eye and MGD support

Optional Step After Peeqing: Hypochlorous Spray

After your face is dry, lightly mist your closed eyes and lids with a hypochlorous lid spray.

  • Reduces bacteria and biofilm
  • Helps prep the skin for makeup or sunscreen
  • Safe to leave on - no rinsing needed
