Why eye doctors recommend it

Eyes can dry out overnight, especially if your eyelids don't fully close while you sleep or your eyes feel gritty and uncomfortable first thing in the morning. Eye drops are designed to be light enough to see through during the day, so they don't last through the night. An ointment like HYLO Night stays on the eye much longer; OPTASE reports over 6 hours of retention, giving you lubrication while you sleep. Eye doctors often recommend pairing a preservative-free daytime drop with a nighttime ointment for 24-hour comfort.

Is HYLO Night right for me?

  • A good fit if your eyes feel dry, gritty or stuck when you wake up.
  • A good fit if you already use daytime drops but still wake up uncomfortable.
  • A good fit if your eye doctor has recommended an ointment for overnight protection.
  • For daytime relief, choose OPTASE HYLO Forte or OPTASE HYLO Relief eye drops. HYLO Night is meant for bedtime only.
  • If you're sensitive to lanolin or wool products, ask your eye doctor before using.

Benefits

  • Forms a long-lasting protective film for overnight comfort
  • Helps relieve dryness and protect against further irritation
  • Preservative-free formula
  • Contains vitamin A (retinol palmitate)
  • Usable for 6 months after opening
  • Pairs with daytime drops for around-the-clock relief

How to use

  1. Remove the protective cap.
  2. Tilt your head backwards and gently pull on the lower eyelid, using a finger of one hand.
  3. With the other hand, hold the tube in an upright position above the eye. Without touching the tip of the tube to your eye or eyelid, instill one strip of eye ointment into the gap formed between the eye and eyelid by gently squeezing the tube.
  4. Close your eye gently, then blink normally.
  5. Replace the cap firmly back onto the tube. To avoid contamination, do not allow the tip of the tube to touch the eye or any other surface.

Use once daily, before bed.

What to expect

Your vision will be blurry right after applying, which is normal for eye ointments and why HYLO Night is used at bedtime. Many people notice their eyes feel more comfortable when they wake up. If you have eye pain, changes in vision, or continued redness or irritation, or if symptoms get worse or last more than 72 hours, stop using it and see your eye doctor.

Key ingredients

  • White petrolatum and mineral oil 91.7% (active): form a protective barrier that keeps moisture on the eye overnight.
  • Lanolin 6.9% (active): a moisturizing lubricant that helps the ointment cushion and soothe the eye's surface.
  • Light mineral oil 1.4% (active): helps the ointment spread smoothly.
  • Vitamin A (retinol palmitate): included in the formula alongside the lubricants.

How long a tube lasts

Each 5 g tube provides about 300 uses, which works out to roughly 6¢ per use. Used nightly in both eyes, a tube lasts about 5 months. Throw the tube away 6 months after opening, even if there's ointment left.

Pairs well with

Many eye doctors recommend a simple day-and-night routine:

  1. Peeq Pro Foaming Eyelid & Facial Cleanser: cleans oil and debris from the lash line before bed
  2. OPTASE HYLO Night: protects and lubricates the eye overnight
  3. OPTASE HYLO Forte: preservative-free drops for daytime comfort

Frequently asked questions

Why should I only use it at night?

Eye ointments are thicker than drops, so they blur your vision for a while after you apply them. Using HYLO Night at bedtime lets it work while you sleep without affecting your vision during the day.

Can I wear contact lenses with HYLO Night?

No. Remove your contact lenses before applying, and don't wear lenses while the ointment is in your eyes.

Can I use HYLO Night with my daytime eye drops?

Yes. Many people use preservative-free drops during the day and HYLO Night at bedtime. If you use other drops or medications in the evening, wait about 30 minutes before applying the ointment.

I'm sensitive to wool. Can I use it?

HYLO Night contains lanolin, which comes from sheep's wool. If you have a known lanolin or wool sensitivity, talk to your eye doctor before using it.

How long does a tube last once opened?

Up to 6 months after opening, or until the roughly 300 uses are gone, whichever comes first.
